The Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies announced that starting April 19, 2017 is required on the label the indication of origin of the raw materials of dairy products in Italy such as UHT milk, butter, yogurt, mozzarella, cheese and curd.

The requirement applies to cow's milk, sheep and goat, buffalo and other animal.

“This is a historic milestone for our country – says Minister Maurizio Martina – che ci consente di creare un nuovo rapporto tra produttori e consumatori.

WHAT CHANGES FROM April 19, 2017

The origin of milk and derivatives must be indicated on the label in clear, visible and easily legible.

The terms used are as follows:

a) “MILKING COUNTRY: Country name in which it has been milked milk”;
b) “CONDITIONING OR CONVERSION COUNTRY: name of the country in which the product has been conditioned or processed milk”.

Where milk or milk used as an ingredient in dairy products has been milked, packaged and processed in the same country, you can use a single word, for example: “ORIGIN OF MILK: ITALY”.

If the packaging and processing phases taking place in the territory of more countries, other than Italy, may be used, depending on the origin, the following entries:

– EU countries milk if the milking takes place in one or more European countries;
– Conditional milk or transformed into EU countries: If these steps are performed in one or more European countries.

If operations take place outside the European Union, it will be used the words “non-EU countries”.

They excluded only the PDO and PGI products already disciplinary also on the origin and fresh milk already mapped.
